RAWALPINDI: A boy allegedly tried to commit suicide by jumping from the third floor of a private school on Tuesday. He survived the fall with serious spinal injuries, which could leave him paralyzed for life, sources said.

Rescue 1122 sources said that the private school management told the rescuers that the 10th grader tried to end his life over failing a class test on the first day of school.

Morgah police station sources told The Express Tribune that the incident will be investigated from various angles to ascertain the causes due to which the boy attempted suicide. “It could be a case of bullying or harassment or excessive pressure by a teacher,” a source said requesting anonymity as the case is yet to be filed properly.

Huge contingents of police were deployed for the security at Pakistan Democratic Movement rally, he said adding that the issue will be taken up on Wednesday (today).

The student, Mateen, was rushed to Benazir Bhutto General Hospital (BBGH) by Rescue 1122. Sources privy to the sad incident disclosed that the private school management conducted a test after the reopening of schools following closures in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

Having failed the test, the young boy feeling frustrated and dejected jumped from the third floor of the school building in a bid to end his life.

However, he survived but sustained serious injuries and was shifted to the BBGH by Rescue 1122 after being rendered first aid.

According to doctors the young boy's backbone was severely damaged as a result of the fall, it may result in paralysis.

However, they are hopeful that with proper treatment and medication they may be able to prevent it.
