QS World subject rankings only recognizes 12 Pakistani universities

In the 2023 Quacquarelli Symonds World subject rankings, only 12 Pakistani universities made the cut.

Multiple fields of study are categorized into five major subject categories in the rankings.

Students can use the rankings to see which universities are the best in a particular subject. A major global survey of employers and academics assesses universities based on research references.

According to media reports, data science, history of art, and marketing are new subjects included in this year's ranking.

According to the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, six of the ten most improved programs are offered by universities in the Arab region. These include Oman, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Qatar and Jordan.

The United States is at the top in 32 subjects. Compared to last year, Harvard University came in first in 14 subjects.

Four Oxford subjects lead the subject tables: Anatomy and Physiology, Anthropology, English Language and Literature, while Archaeology and Modern Languages top the Cambridge list.

NUST ranked 160 in Engineering & Technology, COMSAT University Islamabad ranked 271, University of Engineering and Technology (UET) ranked 279, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad ranked 348, Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) ranked 401-450, and Punjab University ranked 501-530.

Computing Science and Information Systems at LUMS, National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad 351-400, UET ranked between 401 and 450, and University of Punjab between 451 and 500.

The only university ranked at 391 in Life Sciences & Medicine was Agha Khan University Karachi. Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad came in at 346.

LUMS placed 151-200 in Business & Management Studies, the Institute of Business Administration (IBA) between 301-350, University of the Punjab between 401-450, Quaid-i-Azam University between 451-500 and Iqra University between 551-580.

The University of Karachi was ranked between 501-530, IBA between 501-530, and COMSATS University Islamabad between 301-350. LUMS was ranked between 201-250 in Economics & Econometrics.

In Law & Legal Studies, only LUMS was ranked between 301-350, while in Statistics & Operational Research, only Quaid-i-Azam University was ranked between 151-200.

Media reports indicate that in several subjects, no Pakistani university made it into the ranking, including Humanities and Arts, Marketing, Sociology, Sports-Related Subjects, Anthropology, Communication and Media Studies, Development Studies, Education and Training, Hospitality & Leisure Management, Library & Information Management, Politics, Data Science, History of Art, and Social Policy & Administration.
