The Taliban authorities imposed a ban on women's higher education last month, which was met with protests in many cities, as well as closed primary schools in several provinces.
Although the Taliban initially promised a more moderate rule that would respect women's and minorities' rights, they have widely implemented their interpretation of Islamic law since taking power in August 2021.
The government banned girls from middle school and high school, restricted women's employment, and required them to wear head-to-toe clothing in public. Also, women were prohibited from entering parks and gyms without a male relative.
