SC hints at forming committee on lawyers’ fake degrees

Purpose of the case was to improve the quality of education of lawyers, says Acting Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial

The Supreme Court on Tuesday hinted at forming a committee to probe the issue of fake degrees of lawyers and the mushrooming growth of law colleges.

The committee would comprise lawyers for which the apex court sought the names of senior and professional lawyers from the bar councils.

A three-member bench of the top court headed by Acting Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial heard the suo moto notice case.

Justice Bandial said the court wanted to address the issue of fake lawyers' degrees. He said the purpose of the case was to improve the quality of education of lawyers.

The decision of the Supreme Court has not been implemented yet, he said, adding that the Pakistan Bar Council should review the whole process.

Advocate Amir Ali Shah pleaded the court to form a joint investigation team on the issue. He said many lawyers were holding fake degrees.

The hearing of the case was adjourned for two weeks.
