‘Ashamed to see the language used by students,’ Shafqat Mahmood

Proclaiming it to be a collective failure of Parents, teachers and the governments, the Federal Education Minister Shafqat Mahmood said that it is saddening to see the language used by some of the students on Twitter while protesting against government’s decision to hold Cambridge exams.

While speaking to a local TV channel about the current situation formed by the third wave of Coronavirus pandemic in the country, the minister said that he was “ashamed” to see that students who are hardly 16 or 17 years of age could speak such language.

The minister stressed that all provincial ministers have agreed on the point that exams must not be cancelled. While talking about the surge in pandemic, he said “I am not an expert in the area where I can evaluate or predict the Covid-19 situation, but as an education minister I can only stress on the importance of exams.”

On a question about conducting online exams he clarified that Cambridge never gave an option of online exams, “nowhere in the world Cambridge are exams online”, however, he said that some universities conducted online exams for their students because they took the classes online.

The minister further stressed that if we want to maintain the quality of education then exams and assessments are crucial.

It is pertinent to note that many students and parents along with the celebrities and politicians supporting them have come out to protest against physical exams. Meanwhile, Pakistan reported 4,487 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours, taking the country's Covid-19 tally to 804,939. The country's death toll climbed to 17,329 after 142 people succumbed to the deadly disease.

According to NCOC, total active Covid-19 cases across the country were reported to be 87,794.
