The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) plans to lay off more than 13,400 of its employees, 70% of its total staff – which also hints that President Donald Trump expects to curb the student stream of migrants into the US in the coming days.

The layoffs are intended due to the trickle-down effect by decreased petition fees, which is the only income generation channel for USCIS. Sources indicate that the Immigration Services have preceded the current scenario due to Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies according to which there is a significant dip in the number of applications accepted by the USCIS.

It is pertinent to note that earlier his month, the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had announced that international students’ courses could be taken remotely during the Coronavirus pandemic ought to return to their countries. The ruling was promptly challenged in court and revoked.
According to the stats, the US is home to over a million international students who are expected to face the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies.
