Shafqat Mehmood says new policy regarding student unions is underway
Minister for Federal Education Shafqat Mehmood said on Wednesday that the PTI government is planning a new policy to support student unions as in the past; their connections with the political parties have produced damaging results.
While speaking at the Vice-Chancellors Roundtable Conference at Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad on Wednesday, Mehmood urged that measures need to be taken to stimulate tolerance and forbearance in universities' faculty.
Mehmood said that universities are confronting many problems, including hostels, discipline, and narratives that need to be addressed.
He stressed the need for students’ representation, empowering them to pay heed and accept the opinion of others.
While remarking on the problem of politicization of student union, he said the connection between political parties and student unions have formed adverse effects on the education sector.
He clears that government is not against student unions; rather it is in the process of framing new policy on students unions “to make them more effective,” he added
