Public School Established in Multan for the Trans Community
In Multan, the Education Department of South Punjab and the Punjab Government have opened the first public school for transgender students. School Education Minister Murad Raas told the media that it had been discussed with the transgender community prior to its execution.
To ensure their safety, the Punjab Education Department built a separate school for them.
Gradually, the aim is to integrate the Trans community into the mainstream schooling system.
Despite the importance of the transgender community within our society, we have neglected them completely, according to Murad Raas. Neither education nor employment are being provided to them.
This is the first time such a school has opened in Pakistan. As far as establishing these schools in divisional headquarters of major districts is concerned, Mr. Raas said that we will do our best to do so. As of now, it has been launched in Multan, but the future will tell what the response is, after which it will be expanded to other districts.
Dr. Ehtesham Anwar, Secretary School Education South Punjab, has played a major role in implementing this project, down to the very last detail.
Upon the instructions of Dr. Ehtisham, the school will begin at 4 pm. Students will receive free books, stationery, shoes, and uniforms, as well as free transportation to and from school.
Teachers from the transgender community will be recruited under the project. This will also create employment opportunities for them. So far, five teachers with MPhils or BScs have been selected.
Additionally, students will learn various skills such as sewing, make-up, cooking, etc. in order to become economically and academically independent.
