Disabled people deserve access to education on an equitable basis, President Alvi

President Dr Arif Alvi on Tuesday has said that disabled people deserve access to education and employment on equitable basis. He said that education and employment should be provided as their "equitable right, and not as charity."

While speaking at a wheelchair distribution ceremony held at the President's House, the president said, "The State is responsible for transforming the society in a way that it assents and bring to forth the differently-abled persons in all segments of life."

In the ceremony held in Islamabad, the embassy of Azerbaijan gifted 100 custom-made wheelchairs to disabled people in Pakistan. The event was attended by First Lady Samina Alvi, Azerbaijan's ambassador Ali Alizada and disabled persons, including children.

President Alvi stressed implementing comprehensive methods to serve people with disabilities' rights by giving them education at regular schools instead of isolating them at special educational institutes.

He added that people with physical, visual, and hearing disabilities could be easily adjusted into the regular school system, where targeted skilled training is absorbed for their accommodation and workplace.

"It is the time to reject the categorizing of disabled persons and allow them prospects and access to facilities," he said. He also stressed the need to apply disabled quota in jobs properly and to safeguard training through the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC) and Technical Education and Vocational Training Authority (TEVTA) effective outcome.
