“Close Schools Now” is Twitter’s top trend in Pakistan
After the government announced a review meeting to be held on Friday (today) to analyze the situation before reopening educational institutions on January 18, the Pakistani twitter exploded with the memes and tweets trending under #CloseSchoolsNow and #ShafqatMahmood on Thursday night.
Many school students expressed concern on government’s decision to reopen schools when there is a significant uptick in Coronavirus cases in the region.
Asad, a social media user said that “Shafqat uncle, you pretty well know what is the health situation now.” He said that the government should take the decision that is in the benefit of the students.
Another student Saleem Rana requested the government to change their decision as the situation is not favorable for reopening institutes. “You told in your tweets the students health will always be first priority then why you ate reopening institutes?” he reminded the education minister.
Riaz, a social media user calling it government’s double-standards said “education and health ministers doing virtual meetings and want students to take physical classes?” he asked. He said that amid the rising death rate due to Covid-19, this is not the right time to reopen schools.
