AIOU Opens Applications for Imran Khan’s Electric Wheelchair Initiative
Students who are differently-abled may apply to receive free wheelchairs through the former Prime Minister's Electric Wheelchair Scheme at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU).
Thus according to requirements, applications must be submitted by 18 July 2022 for differently-abled students who were enrolled in AIOU for the fall semester of 2021 and the spring semester of 2022.
Students who qualify must submit their application to the Director of Students Affairs, Directorate of SA&CS, Block 25/Gateway Block, Ground Floor, at Allama Iqbal Open University in Islamabad, along with the necessary paperwork, including a CNIC and a disability certificate.
Imran Khan, the former prime minister and current head of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), introduced the Electric Wheelchair Scheme in November 2021 to make it easier for students with disabilities to register in all HEC-recognized higher education institutions.
Students who qualify for the program must have a physical impairment that prevents them from moving around without a wheelchair. These students are entitled to free electric wheelchairs.
The initative is in line with UN SDG 4, which calls for ending gender disparities in educational attainment and granting those with disabilities equitable access to all levels of education.
