Shafqat Mehmood to review the Covid situation today

Islamabad: Federal Minister of Education Shafqat Mehmood will chair today's meeting of ministers of health and education to analyze the country's current coronavirus situation before schools are reopened.

Health officials will brief ministers on the existing frequency of COVID-19 and provide suggestions on the restoration of in-person learning at educational institutions.

In a tweet, Shafqat Mehmood said: "While I desperately want education to continue, the final decision will be on health grounds. Students' well-being will always be a priority."

Shafqat Mehmood to review the Covid situation today

On January 4, Mehmood said that the government would make no concession on children's safety, and another meeting will be held to examine the country's current coronavirus situation.

A phase-wise proposal to reopen educational institutes from January 18, which were closed on November 26 to prevent coronavirus outbreak, had previously been announced by the federal government.

The government of Punjab has informed parents that it will ensure full enforcement in schools with COVID-19 SOPs.

Shafqat Mehmood's statement came as Pakistan is battling a second coronavirus wave of continuously growing cases.

On Thursday, the country recorded its highest spike in coronavirus cases in nearly a month.

Meanwhile, Murad Raas, during a visit to Lahore University, said that the educational institutes in the province would be shut down immediately if the situation required.
