Microsoft decides to shut down Internet Explorer after 27 glorious years

After 27 years, Microsoft has chosen to discontinue Internet Explorer. In 1995, the web browser was first released as part of the Plus! add-on package for Windows 95. Later versions of Internet Explorer were available as free downloads or as part of service packs, and were included in OEM service releases for Windows 95 and later versions of Windows.

Microsoft Edge Program Manager Sean Lyndersay claimed that the Internet Explorer 11 desktop would be decommissioned and out of support on June 15 for certain versions of Windows 10 while explaining about Microsoft shutting down Internet Explorer.

According to reports, Internet Explorer's popularity peaked in 2003, with a 95 percent usage share. However, as new browsers from competitors were released, Internet Explorer's usage base shrank even more in the years that followed.

On August 17, 2021, Microsoft 365 stopped supporting Internet Explorer, while Microsoft Team stopped supporting it since November 30, 2020. On June 15, 2022, Internet Explorer will officially be decommissioned. Those who used computers at home, school, or work in the 1990s and early 2000s may remember the Internet Explorer fondly.
