HEC Announces the PM’s Laptop Program will Restart
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has approved the revival of the Prime Minister's Laptop Scheme for students of government universities in Pakistan. Laptops will be distributed under the program in phases beginning in February 2023.
Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed spoke to Express News at the regional office of HEC on the occasion of his arrival in Karachi. Dr. Mukhtar said in the conversation that the administrative approval in this regard from the Prime Minister It has been found that there was a steering committee meeting in this regard on October 28th and it has been formally announced after the approval of policy points.
According to him, this time laptops will be provided to students of MPhil, PhD, as well as undergraduates of universities and students of Open, Virtual Universities, but the number of laptops for undergraduates will be limited.
In response to an expression of interest in the laptop scheme, he recommended allocating 10 billion rupees for it instead.
In response to a question, the Chairman of HEC said that he would meet the Chief Minister of Sindh during his visit to Karachi. He will recommend an end to the ad hoc system and appoint vice chancellors to manage universities better.
The Chief Minister of Sindh will be requested to leave the reporting channel of the DF to the vice chancellors. This will enable them to solve the problems of the director of finance in the universities of Sindh. Otherwise, the vice chancellors will be powerless and the university management will essentially go to the director of finance.
According to Dr. Mukhtar, universities should stop using allowances and additional funds given along with salaries and control their expenses in order to address the financial crisis.
He intends to amend the undergraduate and PhD policies and remove their defects.
