Despite no tuition fees, the universities in Germany provide high-quality education to students from inside or outside European Union (EU).

Here is how you can apply to study abroad in Germany; and the steps you need to take to be enrolled at an international university in “the Land of Ideas”.

How to apply to a university in Germany

First thing to check while applying to any university in Germany is its admission criteria. You can also do this by contacting their international office. But mostly, you need an Intermediate or A level certificate and transcripts and in case of Masters, you need a higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung – HZB) or equivalent to be admitted.

Some universities also ask the applicants to sit for a university entrance examination (Feststellungsprufung), after attending a preparatory course (Studienkolleg).

In some cases, however, even if the candidate meets all admission requirements, he would not be able to enroll directly. The most popular degree courses in Germany have specific restrictions called Numerus Clauses (NC).

Admission at German universities is based on the high school grade point average (GPA). The higher your score, the greater the chances of being admitted at your dream university.

The current popular subjects with national NC restrictions:

  1. Architecture
  2. Medicine
  3. Dentistry
  4. Veterinary Medicine

Language requirements for German university application

It is pertinent to note that Germany offers a small number of undergraduate courses fully taught in English. However, there are some courses that are taught both in German and English – which give you a great chance to improve your German skills during your Bachelor’s studies. Graduate students will find a growing diversity of English–taught degrees in Germany.

Two main German language tests are accepted by all universities in Germany:

DSH (German language exam for university entrance) – available only in Germany

TestDaF – available in 90 countries worldwide

If the course you apply to join and that are partially taught in English, you will have to provide an English language certificate. The most popular are:

  1. IELTS Academic
  2. TOEFL iBT
  3. PTE Academic
  4. Required university application documents
  5. Each university has its admission criteria, but, generally, most of the following will be included:

  7. Translation of the course modules and grades
  8. Passport photo(s)
  9. Copy of your passport

University application deadlines in Germany

Students applying to German universities can start their studies either in winter or summer:

The application deadline for the winter enrolment is 15th of July

The application deadline for the summer enrolment is 15th of January

However, the application deadlines can vary from university to university. We recommend that you always check the dates and start your application process much prior to the admission openings. It will allow you the time if you need to resubmit some documents or some emergency occurs.
