4 killed in a van blast inside Karachi University
A van inside Karachi University had exploded, killing four people, including a Chinese teachers and injuring several others.
According to Express News, an explosion took place in a van inside Karachi University, the sound of which was heard far away, the windows of nearby buildings were shattered and there was panic among people. The blast killed four people and injured several others.
As soon as the blast was reported, rangers, police, fire brigade and other rescue agencies rushed to the spot and shifted the bodies and injured to the hospital.
Police officials said that the blast took place near Confucius Institute of Karachi University. The van caught fire due to the blast which was a result of a suicide bomber blowing herself up as soon as the van was approaching the gate.
It is reported that the vehicle entered Karachi University through the gate of Maskan Chowrangi in which three foreign teachers were present.
SP Gulshan Iqbal said that ball bearing marks were found on the affected vehicle. A team of Bomb Disposal Squad had inspecting the site.
Karachi Police Chief Ghulam Nabi Memon had also said that the initial reports suggested that the blast was a suicide in which a burqa-clad woman may be involved but the final details came to light after investigation.
There were also reports that the blast was caused by an explosive device. Eyewitnesses said that as soon as the van reached the Confucius Institute, it exploded and three Rangers personnel who were walking in front of the van were also injured. It was also assumed that explosives were planted in the bike parked near the vehicle.
The registrar of Karachi University said that teachers and van drivers were killed in the blast.
Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has strongly condemned the van blast inside Karachi University and expressed sorrow over the loss of precious lives.
The Prime Minister conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims and said that the incident was highly reprehensible and shared the grief of the bereaved families. The Prime Minister also prayed for speedy recovery of the injured.
