Lahore inaugurates its first transgender school
On Wednesday, the Punjab School Education Department (SED) inaugurated the first transgender school in the provincial capital.
Murad Raas, Punjab's Minister for School Education, cut the ribbon to open the school near Barkat Market in New Garden Town. At the event, civil society activists, educators, members of the transgender community, and others participated.
Three transgender schools have already been established by the department in Multan, Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan in the last year. As part of the free education program, these institutes offered training in three skills, including sewing, cooking, and beauty make-up.
A two-shift system will be in place at the school. The first shift will consist of education, while the second shift will consist of technical training. A free pick-up and drop-off service will be provided by the government, as well as books, uniforms, and school bags.
A total of 36 transgender students attended the school. Government Girls High School Barkat Market, New Garden Town was the site of the school's establishment. The girl's school has a designated area for transgender students. Three classrooms were constructed in a two-story building.
