Overview

Catherine Temple Mathematics Award

The Catherine Temple Mathematics Award is presented annually to an eligible female student graduating from a TCDSB secondary school to encourage and support her in her pursuit of studies in mathematics or a mathematics related field at a Canadian post-secondary institution.

A scholarship shall be awarded to a graduating female student pursuing studies in mathematics:

  1. Academic standing shall be the main criteria used in the selection of the recipient

  2. The student will also have a record of significant contribution to the school community especially in areas related to mathematics (such as participation in a math club, in mathematics contests, etc.)

  3. Financial need, in the broad sense, may be considered as a “tie breaker” in the event that there are a number of students who demonstrate academic merit

The final selection of the recipient will be made by a selection panel comprising the Superintendent of Curriculum Leadership & Innovation, the Mathematics Program Co-ordinator and a Superintendent of Schools of the Board. The Temple family, unless and until they otherwise request, shall be invited to participate in the selection of the recipient.

The award of no less than $4,000.00, will be given to a graduating female student upon proof of registration in mathematics or in a mathematics related program at a recognized Canadian post-secondary institution. An award letter will be presented to the recipient during the recipient’s school’s annual graduation/closing ceremonies. The Temple family, unless and until they otherwise request, shall be invited to present the award to the recipient.

The TCDSB, in consultation with the Temple family, will review annually and adjust the amount of the award, if sustainable, in order to keep the award in line with the current average first year tuition at a Canadian university. In no case will the award be less than $4,000.

If for any reason, the award is to be discontinued, any remaining principal amount and interest accrued will be given, in Catherine Temple’s honour, to St. Michael’s College
of the University of Toronto to be used at the College’s discretion.
