PESHAWAR: Chairman of the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Dr Tariq Javed Banuri, called for measures to improve quality education and raise the value of degrees awarded by universities.

"As chairman of HEC, I have set five objectives. These include safeguarding students' rights, preserving university autonomy, allowing instructors academic freedom, and combating corruption, he said at a seminar titled "Higher Education in Pakistan: Past, Present, and Future." The seminar was hosted by the Peshawar University Teachers Association (PUTA) at the University of Peshawar.

He went over the five objectives in great detail. The first purpose was to safeguard and defend students' rights. It is the right of kids to have access to high-quality education. The second objective was to ensure university autonomy. Academic independence was the third goal. Teachers should tell it like it is. It was my responsibility to clean up the system. A transparent system should exist, and teachers and students should be able to speak whatever they wish.

Accountability was the fourth objective. According to him, all public and private universities are public institutions that are accountable to society, whereas the fifth goal is to stop corruption.

He believes that instructors and students, not the government or the HEC, should determine the future of higher education. According to him, teachers should execute their jobs honestly in order to get kids on the proper track.
