Karachi University employees protest over leave encashment

Karachi University employees believe those responsible for financial mismanagement should be brought forward, the vice chancellor should keep his word, scholarships have been discontinued for the children of employees, and leave encashment money should be released as soon as possible.

Express News reports that the University of Karachi employees protested for the right to leave because of mismanagement and financial problems.

KU employees have been protesting since April 17th, demanding leave encashment, benefits, and scholarships, and now they've gone on strike while offices have also been boycotted.

As a result of not receiving their annual leave encashment, University of Karachi employees held a general body meeting and unanimously passed a resolution to declare a strike today, May 5th.

It will either be a collective one-month leave or a complete strike if the demand is not accepted. All public services, transport, practical lab and counter operations will remain closed.

Interestingly, Associate Professor Riaz Ahmed of the University of Karachi revealed that Dr. Tariq Kaleem, who has not presented a budget for six years and has not attended the Syndicate meeting, won the best performance award for presenting a surplus budget.

Due to rising inflation, leave encashment has been stopped by the administration, which is causing thousands of employees to worry.

A probe will be conducted regarding the performance and allegations against the Finance Director, Murtaza Wahab told Express News. During the meeting, employees explained that Karachi University is facing a serious financial crisis due to financial mismanagement, and that Tariq Kaleem is the main responsible party.

In the opinion of the employees, the Vice Chancellor should fulfill his promise and release the leave encashment allowance. The leave encashment allowance has already been approved by the competent authority at KU.

In addition, the University of Karachi's director of finance has stopped employees' children's scholarships for two years, according to employees.

In the absence of acceptance of these demands, the strike will continue without pen. Work in departments, administrative office affairs, and point drivers will also be boycotted.
