In Iran, schoolgirls took off their hijabs to protest the government
In Iran, protests have been taking place in different parts of the country for the past several weeks.
Now, schoolgirls have also joined the demonstrations, which started when Iranian woman Mahsa Amini was murdered for ‘violating the hijab law’.
In videos that have gone viral on social media, it can be seen that teenage girls dressed in uniform are waving their scarves in the air while chanting slogans against the Iranian authorities.
Dozens of schoolgirls blocked traffic on a main road in the southern city of Shiraz on Monday, taking off their headscarves and waving them in the air, chanting "Death to the dictator".
Karaj is located just west of the capital Tehran. In another video from there, the students can be seen and heard shouting against the government's repression, in which she says, "If we don't unite, they will kill us one by one."
More schoolgirl protests were reported in Tehran and the northwestern cities of Saqqez and Sanandaj on Tuesday.
Several students took pictures in their classrooms without covering their heads. The schoolgirl protests began after Ayatollah Khomeini, who holds the final say on all state affairs, broke his silence on the unrest, blaming the riots on Iran's enemies, the United States and Israel.
During the latest round of anti-regime protests raging across the country, schoolgirls have been at the forefront, challenging the authorities. Students have organized protests in schools, taking off their hijabs and chanting anti-government slogans. On the internet, pictures and videos of their demonstrations have gone viral.
Schools have been raided by security forces since last week as a means of suppressing the protests. Students are often detained forcibly by plainclothed officers after they have been informed by school administrators.
Schools have also been using tear gas in some cases. The Iranian Teachers Union condemned the "brutal and inhumane" raids on schools and confirmed that schoolgirls were violently arrested and killed.
