Anti-encroachment operation to transfer land to KU
In response to the occupation of Karachi University's land, an operation was launched at the Silver Jubilee Gate.
Karachi Development Corporation is carrying out this operation on the recommendation of the University of Karachi, and on Tuesday morning the staff of Karachi Development Corporation arrived at the Silver Jubilee Gate with heavy machinery to demolish slums (shacks) on university land. Karachi University's state office staff and security staff attended the event as well.
Approximately 3 acres of the 7 acres in front of the University of Karachi campus have been occupied by a number of groups. An operation is underway against the settlement established in front of the Silver Jubilee Gate. The operation against car dealers and restaurants remains to be completed.
A few months ago, the administration of the University of Karachi suggested that the concerned Deputy Commissioner conduct an operation against the land-grabbing mafia and transfer the university land. In response to this request, the Karachi Development Authority was involved in this matter.
Restaurants and car dealers have been using university land unhindered to expand their business for quite some time now.
Meanwhile, when Express News contacted Jameel Baloch, a state officer with the Karachi Development Authority, he said, "Our job is to stop the encroachment. The issue of car dealers and restaurants must be handled by DMC and KMC, and need to be contacted by Karachi University."
