Concept of Education
This can mean developing different skills, views, and practices that will benefit a student. In order to function properly in society, education is indispensable. This is particularly necessary so that a person is willing and able to be a responsible person who is also cognizant of their rights under the law. There is a belief that education refers solely to the education gained at a young age. In reality, education is much more expansive, and extends beyond what is learnt in school. The truth is, education can also refer to how we react in our everyday meetings with people, and in many other similar forms of communication. These methods of learning can be very beneficial to what we already study in school.
Education can be divided into the following types:
Formal education is the type of education that requires an environment that is structured. This commonly means some sort of formal institution like a school, or a college. The formal education journey begins at an extremely young age and continues into adulthood. Most communities make some level of formal education compulsory. Usually, after this, some people choose to pursue higher education. In formal education, there is a particular focus on maintaining a very specific program, or curriculum. However, perhaps the most important part of formal education is that it usually involves professionally trained teachers. These teachers have usually pursued higher education and are qualified specifically in providing a formal education. It is crucial to note that formal education also includes interactions and activities that take place outside the classroom. Formal education tends to enforce a meticulous and disciplined method of learning.
Vocational education is a type of education that is focused on some sort of specific skill or craft. It is considered learning by ‘doing.’ This education is more hands on, and usually involves some sort of practical work experience.
Special Education is described as education that is passed on to those who have some sort of disability. Since not every person has the same learning requirements, special education helps bridge the gap and provides proper forms of learning for students in special circumstances. Different tools, and methods are used to help pass on knowledge.
Informal education is described as process of learning, or gaining information in a unplanned manner. In this form of education, a learner does not consciously seek knowledge, but instead learns ‘informally’ simply by observing and communicating with others. Informal education does not require an institutional form of learning, instead it can be done anywhere. It also does not require any form of structure, or syllabus. Informal education is the process, by which a person imbibes attitudes, develops skills, cultivates values, and acquires knowledge, without there being any organization or system about it. This would include the deliberate attempts of parents and elders in the family and community to help the young ones grow and adapt themselves to the environment. Informal education would also include all incidental learning that takes place while at work or at play and during travels-as well as spontaneous learning through films, radio and television.’
Self-directed education is the process of learning by oneself. Meaning, this involves a person studying on their own. They may use several different resources, for example libraries, online guides, etc. The focus of this type of learning is on the individual, as they interact with the resources directly. There is no teacher, or mentor involved in this process, and it requires no formal institution. This type of learning requires a conscious effort from the learner involved.
K-12 education is the most popular form of education in the world. It is particularly popular in India, the United States of America, and Canada. The K-12 education is an alternative to traditional approaches to education. It differs particularly when it comes to student-teacher interaction. This education system extends from kindergarten all the way to class 12. This system is predicated on increased student-teacher interaction. It also encourages the asking of questions from students. This form of education is unique because instead of putting all the pressure on the students, it encourages students to learn on their own, with the guidance of a ‘leader’, in this case, the teacher. This method encourages students to provide their own insight into a subject, as opposed to regurgitating the same information over and over again. This way the system creates a type of individualized, value-oriented learning that is not completely reliant on the teacher. The aim of the K-12 education system is to develop students into self-reliable and independent individuals.
What is an Educational Counsellor?
An education counselor is someone who is focused on making sure that the academic environment of a school is maintained properly. Several schools have counselors that guide students to the right career choice. They are particularly helpful in helping special needs children. Counselors also try and take an active interest in a student’s personal issues, as these can quickly impact a student’s learning abilities. To resolve such issues, and Educational Counsellor also interacts with the student’s parents or guardian or teachers to help them in figuring out the best solutions for the student’s problems.
