For classes 1-9, the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) has announced its annual examination promotion policy for 2023.

According to the official notification, classes 1 and 2 will have annual examinations like any other class.

The following requirements must be met by students in classes 3 and 4.

  • Each subject must achieve a minimum pass percentage of 40%.
  • There can be a failure in one or more subjects, provided the overall percentage of failures is at least 40%.
  • A student who fails more than two subjects will have to retake the course.

Classes 5 to 8 students will be promoted according to the following subject categories:

For class 5:

English, Math, General Science, Urdu, Islamiyat, Social Studies

In classes 6 and 7, there are the following promotion requirements.

  • If you fail a subject, but obtain at least 20% marks in the other subject, you will have an overall grade of 40% if you include failed subjects.
  • An average of 40% including two failed subjects, one from each category. Each failing subject carries a 20% mark.
  • The student failed two subjects of Category II but scored 20% in each. Overall, the student scored 40% including the failed subjects.
  • Students failing more than two subjects of Category-I will be required to repeat the class.

Under the FDE, a pass percentage of 35% will be required for all external/centralized exams in 2023.

From 2024 onwards, it will be increased to 40%. In order to advance to the next grade, students must meet the following criteria.

  • Deficiency in any one of the subjects in either category, but scoring 20% in that subject with a 40% overall average.

  • A total of 40% despite failure in two subjects of Category-II, each subject achieving 20%.
  • There will be a requirement to repeat two subjects from Category-I for students who fail them.

Class 9 students failing three subjects in FBISE's first annual exam will be promoted to class 10 and permitted to take FBISE's second annual exam.

  • Failure in up to three subjects in the first annual exams will result in promotion to class 10. This will result in the right to appear in the first annual exam in class 10.
  • It is possible for students to fail more than three subjects in the first annual exams and be considered fresh students in class 9, with their results being canceled.
