VC of RMU says students involved in research at undergraduate level. Students are being taught how to conduct research in Rawalpindi Medical University (RMU) at the undergraduate level which is then published in the university’s Student Research Journal.
The RMU has become one of the top ranked medical universities of Pakistan according to the Impact Times Higher Education (THE) World Ranking 2022.
This was highlighted by RMU Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Mohammad Umer. Talking to Media, he said the university had some unique models to launch in academics, research and patient care. The university’s infrastructure was also modernised, he added.
RMU was established in May 2017 along with Nishtar Medical University in Multan and Faisalabad Medical University. It was accredited by Pakistan Medical Council (PMC) and Higher Education Commission (HEC) in 2020. After getting accreditation by regulatory bodies, with meagre financial and human resources, RMU has become a premier medical university of the country.
It changed undergraduate curriculum to integrated modular curriculum according to the standards of World Federation of Medical Education (WFME). It is the only university in Punjab teaching the modern curriculum among 19 public sector medical colleges of Punjab,” he said, adding that RMU revolutionised the postgraduate medical education by introducing the University Residency Programme (URP). This system of training is based on international standards of knowledge, skill and attitude as practiced in universities in the United States.
The university also introduced a new internship programme for new graduates inducted in training as junior residents after going through five years in medical school.
As per PMC rules, they are rotated in Medicine and Allied and Surgical and Allied disciplines.
RMU introduced a structured internship programme unique in Pakistan that is similar to the UK model, which is based on competency. Structured assessment is an integral part of the training. This programme is equivalent to the National Licencing Exam (NLE) launched by PMC Pakistan, he said. In infrastructure development and patient-care, RMU developed training in gastroenterology, emergency medicine, critical care, infectious diseases, plastic surgery, and paediatric surgery. A Clinical Trial Unit (CTC) was also established in RMU.
