HEC Chairman Pens Letter to the Governor of Sindh

According to media reports, the Federal Higher Education Commission Chairman Dr. Mukhtar has written a letter to the Acting Governor of Sindh, Agha Siraj Durrani, regarding the absence of permanent vice chancellors in 9 universities across Sindh for a substantial amount of time.

In the letter he mentions that the continuity and quality of leadership in universities is the primary objective of the city’s educational performance. It develops the institutional vision, aligns the strategic dimension with the university's plans and priorities, and provides the resources, high-quality learning and research opportunities needed to provide good governance.

It has been observed that in most cases, the vacancy of the post of Vice-Chancellor arises as a result of delay in the process of appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor, i.e. after the current Vice-Chancellor leaves the University on completion of his tenure. An interim arrangement is usually made, in some cases, for more than a year.

In such a situation, the operational, academic and research momentum of the university is set back, which often takes considerable time and effort to restore. If we aspire and plan to be internationally aligned in higher education and research, it is essential that the office of the Vice-Chancellor is permanently occupied by a regular Vice-Chancellor appointed through a search committee process so that the University and academic performance of the institute do not suffer.
