Hamdard University research seminar on excessive social media use by the youth
Students at Hamdard University told Express News that the habit of excessively using smartphones and the increasing use of social media in solitude is having negative effects on their social lives.
Approximately 18-19 year old students suffer from the negative consequences of this addiction unknowingly, and 13 research projects were presented at the annual seminar.
One of the prizes was awarded to a research project on social anxiety disorder among young adults in Karachi and its association with vice. The second prize went to a research project focusing on smartphones, social media, and social isolation among youth, and the third prize went to a research project focusing on hygiene principles and cleanliness among common women of Sindh (Tharparkar).
According to Muhammad Anas and Mustafiz Rohma, the group leaders of the first- and second-prize-winning projects, 49.2% of young people spend three to six hours on social media every day, which impacts their mental and physical health.
However, such youngsters soon become isolated socially.
Aside from social media's positive aspects, cyberbullying in isolation and young people's addiction to games like PUBG often lead to serious damage. This phenomenon is defined by the term "social addiction".
