Animal Activists Condemn Veterinary Universities for Abuse of Stray Animals

Animal welfare is a rare concept in Pakistan, with the majority of the population being completely unaware of animal rights. With no laws or legal parties there to defend them, the bulk of stray and homeless animals suffer as a consequence.

Now, people have begun to raise their voice to safeguard the rights of animals during the ethical practice of veterinary medicine and the treatment of animals, striving to protect them and make this world a better place for them.

Recently an issue has been brought to the surface about veterinary universities in Pakistan experimenting on healthy stray animals. Students, activists and animal lovers across the nation have started releasing videos from inside these Operating Theatres and buildings of live and healthy animals being experimented on, without the use of any sedatives/anesthesia to “cut costs”.

A few universities that have been named by activists and celebrities such as Yashma Gill and Tipu Sharif are allegedly COMSATS (Lahore), Arid University (Rawalpindi), Ripah University (Islamabad), and more to be named yet. The abhorrent and unethical practices going on in these institutes have provoked animal activists to come out and protest the abuse of innocent, helpless stray animals being picked up off roads to be butchered, experimented on, and then kept in atrocious and horrifying conditions.

Other tabloids such as Pro Pakistani and Geo News have uncovered and unearthed these revolting practices going on behind the scenes, which have triggered many citizens and animal lovers. A few students have exposed the torture as well, claiming that they have no choice but to participate in these experiments and brutal mistreatment of animals.

So far, foundations such as the Ayesha Chundrigar Foundation (ACF) have come out and spoken up against the cruel ill-treatment, hoping that the more people talk about this, the more probability there is of reaching the higher education board and authorities, who have the power to put an end to this.

These will be the future vets of the country, being desensitized to caring for animals by having to practice operations on them, which are completely unethical and inhumane. This is the time to raise a collective voice for the animals of Pakistan.
