Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences: The Stigma
Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences: The Stigma
With modernization casually but surely stepping into Pakistani society, we are breaking away from worshipping conventionally applauded fields, like Engineering, Business, Medical or Computer Science towards more social majors, somewhat debunking the stigma towards Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.
Back in the day, anything which was not a part of STEM majors was considered impractical as it was assumed that fields outside of those four entailed no scope, nor did they guarantee a steady future and promising lifestyle which was sought for heartily.
You might still find that occasional uncle telling you to be an engineer or banker like his five sons or a doctor like his three daughters, so just for that (there can’t be any other reason obviously), we’ve gathered a list of advantages you can list down for pursuing a degree in Arts, Humanities or Social Sciences.
Let’s take a look at them.
THE ART OF QUESTIONING
The abstract nature of many Arts and Humanities degrees encourages and leaves a lot of room for questioning, effectively reinforcing the habit of critical analysis. For example, Literature students learn to critically analyze study texts to “read in between the lines” to search for their hidden meanings. On the other hand, History students delve into a range of historical accounts to string together timelines.
Similarly, the professional world allows questioning for critical insight. Developing a critical eye will not only allow you to work effectively but also encourage improvement in whatever job you take.

A Bachelor’s of Arts in Humanities might your way forward if you’re passionate about communication, knowledge about people and ideas, and most importantly, creativity. Humanities nurture open-mindedness and flexibility, staying true to the core philosophy behind Humanities, that is: people are innately subjective, and all research should mirror that.
