5 effective Tips for attempting exams

The act of taking exams is an important aspect of a student's education, and attempting exams is not as easy as it seems. However, academic literacy, which encompasses the process of developing specific skills throughout the educational process, is necessary. Hence, syllabus preparation is not the only thing that should be addressed, as students face different problems like managing time and understanding questions. Following are few tips to overcome these problems:

1. Be Prepared:

You must come prepared on the exam day; make sure you have covered all the topics given in the syllabus. Apart from the syllabus don’t forget to keep important tools in your bag you need for the exam i.e. a pencil box which must have an extra pen and all the stationery you need, also if it’s a math, accounting or equivalent exam, make sure to carry a calculator if you’re allowed to use. You can get a clipboard too if you want, other than that you should carry a water bottle with you and wearing a wrist watch would be helpful for you to manage time well in case there’s no clock in the exam hall. Get these things ready, sleep on time and wake up a little earlier so you can have time for breakfast and revision.

2. Revision:

Once you are completely prepared it’s time for you to get a good sleep so you can wake up fresh on the exam day, eat your breakfast so you don’t feel hungry during exam. Get ready on time; make sure you don’t forget anything, especially your institutes’ ID card/Admit card. Try to reach your institute a little earlier so you can have time for revision as revising before giving the exam will have lesser chances to forget the lesson learnt.

3. Reading the exam paper carefully:

Before you begin writing the paper, thoroughly read the exam paper, don’t skip the student’s details at the start of the paper which includes the roll number. Make sure to check both the sides of the paper as missing out questions on the other side of the paper is a common mistake made by the students. Teachers also guide you in the examination hall so pay attention to the important details. You will clearly grasp what task you must complete and what requirements are imposed on writing and paper design.

4. Attempting questions accordingly:

Once you have read the paper carefully you will know the topics and questions that needs to be answered. Start by filling out details first, like name, roll number and subject etc. If you are already prepared for all the questions present in the exam then you are good to go, you can start answering, starting from the first question and so on. In case there are questions you are not prepared for which needs brain storming or the conceptual ones, in this case you should first attempt the ones you know well and then attempt the other questions in the end after thinking carefully and come up with an appropriate answer. Also make sure to mention the correct question number in the answer sheet.

5. Proper headings and conclusion:

When you start writing the exam, first mention the correct question number at the start of every answer; make sure it’s clearly written. Then write the heading, where it is necessary to introduce the reader with the subject, convey the topic, and explain why it is vital to handle a given topic. Conclude the answer by describing the topic that has been completed and make suitable judgments about the tasks that were formulated in the introduction. Make sure the material of the introduction is not repeated, the major body of the work, or the paragraph conclusions.
